Wausau 4000i-DT behavioral care windows’ proven performance serves behavioral and mental health facilities for 40+ years

While patient safety remains a primary consideration in psychiatric applications, modern designs for behavioral health care focus on fostering a home-like and healing atmosphere with natural light and unrestricted views to the outside. For more than 40 years, hospitals, clinics and specialty care facilities have relied on the proven, high performance of Wausau Window DT Series products, a brand of Apogee Architectural Metals.

Psychiatric, behavioral care, mental health and treatment centers must balance numerous requirements and goals. Providing a verified solution, Wausau DT Series products ensure the highest levels of patient safety and security, allow access to daylight and outdoor views, and create comfortable, calm, quiet spaces with architecturally appealing style. Wausau Window brand products are supported with an industry-leading warranty of up to 10 years.

These best-in-class, aluminum-framed Wausau 4000i-DT Series windows have an AAMA AW120 Performance Grade and meet the AAMA 501.8 Standard Test Method for Determination of Resistance to Human Impact of Window Systems Intended for Use in Behavioral Care Applications, a Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) document. To pass AAMA 501.8, windows are  “drop tested” for interior human impacts up to 2,000 foot-pounds, similar to the shoulder impact of a 200-pound person moving at 25 feet per second.

Wausau Window products also are tested for air and water resistance, structural integrity, condensation resistance and thermal cycling. The 4000i-DT windows’ thermally broken framing also reduces sound transmission and improves condensation resistance. These attributes contribute to the building’s energy efficiency, indoor air quality, cleanliness and occupants’ health and well-being. Integral between-glass blinds offer privacy control with concealed raise/lower cords and optional occupant-controlled tilt.

Wausau 4000i-DT windows can achieve:
  • Acoustic performance with sound transmission class ratings as high as STC 49 and outdoor-indoor transmission class ratings as high as OITC 37
  • Thermal performance with National Fenestration Rating Council U-factors as low as 0.34
  • Framing condensation resistance factors as high as CRF 60

Available as fixed or side-hinged in-swing casements, Wausau 4000i-DT Series windows are manufactured with 4-inch-deep aluminum mitered and corner-blocked frame and vent construction. No vent joinery is exposed to the exterior. The mechanically fixed infill retainers accept a variety of security glazing materials.

Wausau 4000i-DT windows use triple glazing as standard with 1-inch insulated glass at the exterior, and laminated or polycarbonate glazing on the interior. Anti-ligature sash corners and hardware enhance safety. Concealed hinges and tamper-resistant locks secure the opening during normal operating conditions. Authorized maintenance teams have keyed access to clean the windows from the building’s interior, rather than rigging exterior equipment.

Along with minimal maintenance and durable, long-lasting performance, high-performance finishes support facilities’ sustainable goals and aesthetic versatility. Linetec, Wausau’s single source solution for architectural finishing, offer eco-friendly anodized finishes in a range of metallic tones, painted coatings in more than 50,000 colors, plus specialty and custom-blended finishes. Wausau 4000i-DT windows’ aluminum framing with polyamide nylon thermal barrier also accommodates economical dual finishing options where the color on the interior can be different from the color on the exterior.

In addition to 4000i-DT Series windows, Wausau 2187-DT windows and custom psychiatric fenestration systems also have been engineered through development programs with state agencies and their architectural consulting partners in New York, Missouri, Tennessee, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
